Why is this placed here? Shouldn’t it be earlier?

the early supes books all actively contradict each other, so this is the best possible placement I’ve found. He looks much younger, but his interactions with luthor, the krypton related stuff, etc, all make it have to be a couple books in for him. Still, it is VERY early, just about the third “modern/silver age” book in his order.

This is the second story meant to be a Superman Origin story: the first was John Byrne’s 1986 miniseries, Superman: The Man of Steel. Superman For All Seasons was written as a companion story for it. Then, in 2003, it was replaced in canon by Superman: Birthright, a position it only held until it was nullified in Infinite Crisis. When Superman Confidential began publishing after IC, it was meant to be a telling of Superman’s earliest adventures, but those taking place after his as-of-yet unwritten origin story. Superman: Kryptonite is amongst them. And, finally, Superman: Secret Origins now holds the place as the official origin story. So, if you ask me, the order of the early Superman trades should be this:

Superman: The Man of Steel – Volume 1
    Superman For All Seasons
    Superman: Birthright
    Superman: Secret Origins
    Superman: Kryptonite

I haven’t read secret origins yet, so I’m gonna wait on that one.

The others I read all in one day and spent the whole day just moving them around – then had to go back and do it again pretty recently when we were messing with luthor: man of steel. Ended up back in this order again. I’m not sure if you’ve read them all yet, but I generally like to go by what’s actually in the trade, not what they say is in there.

The thin is, DC’s offical line and what the trades actually Do/say aren’t always the same. The books just work better in the order I have them, I think.

The rest of man of steel takes place in post crisis continuity, so volume II comes well after.

Volume I HAS to be around where superman meets batman, with the other stuff before it. That’s a major event, so we can’t place it before the batman books where he hasn’t met superman yet.
