I’m periodically on the look out for ways to thank people who have helped with the site.
I’ve given a few gift cards in the past (and will in the future, though cash is sadly low right now) but I like to send out books that I think will interest people.
Monday I’ll be sending a Batman: Under The Hood volume to Alex as a little thank you for his Uncle Gorby’s Corner of Free Stuff features.
For the rest of you, the Justice League International: The Secret Gospel of Maxwell Lord giveaway is ending tonight, so make sure you comment if you’re interested in that book!
Next week is Christmas, which is a pretty big deal to some people (I’ve heard.)
I’m not sure I’ll be able to come up with anything themed, but maybe I’ll find something with multiple copies to spread the joy around a bit.
I do have some pretty amazing stuff up my sleeve already, but I’m saving the huge prizes for our one year anniversary. Believe me, you’ll wanna be around for that one. I’m keeping track of how many people are commenting and trying to have at least one a sweet prize for each of you and one HUGE prize for one person (might be based on writing the most reviews or something, since it’s a really really nice prize.)
It’s gonna be a little nuts and I’m probably going to max out my credit card just on shipping.
But for some reason the idea of giving away a shitton of really awesome books is even more exciting than buying them for myself.
Well, about the same amount of exciting – I have to admit to being really really really thrilled about the few marvel ultimate collections I snagged on ebay.
Sshh. It’s ok. We’ll figure out rent somehow.

I got the Alias ones, which I think I told you already, but I also snapped and got the Amazing Spider-Man 1-5 lot. Every time I checked it in my watched item, the seller had set the Buy It Now down another ten dollars. It finally went to 69 dollars and I figured I had to jump on it. Too good a deal!

Oh, and the first year anniversary will be in April, I think. And if we’re “on schedule” then that will be the end of public beta and the beginning of just being the site, I guess.
Not that public beta really means anything in this sole developer hobby context, but at least it means I should have a handle on everything and the site should be working.
Right now I’m just taking it to mean the marvel list will be up and we’ll have settled into our regular rhythm of updates and reviews.
I’m sure we’ll always be adding new features and lists.

Nice! My first-year anniversary will be at the end of March, so right around the same time. And as long as I can get back on track over the next couple months, I think I’ll be hitting 50 reviews around then as well. Exciting!!
And wow, what a great deal on those Ultimate Collections! I’ve never really looked into getting them since I have all the single issues, but I do know they retail for considerably more than what you paid. That’s honestly my favorite modern creative run, after New X-Men. Do those 5 TPBs cover the entirety of JMS’s run, or is there one more after that?

I think the ultimate collections are normally 35 (which is still a good deal for 500 pages of comics when 94 page trades are going for 12). It worked out to about 15 each including shipping.
I think it covers the entire run, right up to.. uh.. Brand New Day? Dan Slot and the revolving creative teams? I’m still not entirely clear, since I haven’t been doing much placing yet, but I think it’s the whole run.
Kind of scary. I know the major spoiler at the end and I wonder if that will impact my enjoyment. It’s weird, I haven’t read any spider-man since I was a kid. The last arcs I remember are the dawn of Venom, Maximum Carnage stuff, a bit of the clone saga, and random adventures that were in trades – Strange Adventures, Cosmic Adventures. Stuff like that, I think.

Well between Tom DeFalco’s run in the late ’80s and JMS’s run, there’s not a whole lot worth reading, to be honest. So in reality, it sounds like you actually might have been smarter than the rest of us who did keep reading. :)
I don’t think there’s any reason to let the end of JMS’s run sully the experience for you. It wasn’t his idea at all, and in fact he was so appalled that he asked for his name to be taken off the book, but Quesada wouldn’t let him. Basically, I just look at it as JMS not being able to give his run a proper finale and as another writer coming in and taking a dump on the previous few years of storylines. And honestly, that happens all the time in comics (see: the X-Men), which I guess makes it slightly more palatable.
Also, just this last summer, they elaborated more on what happens at the end of JMS’s run. That made the whole thing easier to swallow too, I think.
