One of the first groups of trades I started collecting was DC’s Elseworlds.
They were mostly self contained and often could be found for cheap, so it was easy to get into without feeling I had to buy too much.
This particular Elseworlds, published in 1991, is one of my favorites.
Called Batman: Holy Terror, it’s a little book that introduces a DC Universe amazingly messed up and hard to top – even in longer arcs.
While a Batman book, there are moments in here with several DC characters, though I don’t want to reveal which in this post. Look forward to reading it yourself!

I’m always game for an Elseworlds Batman story and haven’t read this particular one. Consider this giveaway commented upon. Man, why doesn’t DC do more Elseworlds books now? I guess theoretically Superman: Earth One is an Elseworlds of sorts…

yeah, it is in the continuity sense but less so in spirit.
I agree, I’d like to see some now and then. They did do Justice in 2007 though, which isn’t too far away. I think that I wouldn’t mind seeing a nice big one every two years with a smaller prestige style one every year or so – and it would be cool to see them tackle some lesser known characters instead of mostly Bat/Supes

lots, but the main ones are that America is a theocratic state (think inquisition) and Bruce Wayne is a reverend.

The thing about Justice though is it was just a great story, it wasn’t all Elseworld-Crazy like. I’m a BIG fan of Elseworld-Crazy. Give me more insane stuff that would NEVER happen.

I just googled “Flashpoint” to see what the heck you’re talking about…and I have to say…What the heck is going on?!?!? It looks CrAzY! I look forward to buying the main, and tie-in, trades :-)

Secret Seven are on the list of titles, gotta love that especially if they somehow tie in with Enid Blytons novels somehow (although obviously would never)

I just saw a bunch of Secret Seven trades yesterday at that bookstore, but wasn’t sure if they were good or not. I saw that Zatana was on the cover of V1. It looks like you’re a fan of them, eh?

Secret Seven aren’t to be confused with Seven Soldiers of Victory, which itself is a fantastic classic series. Secret Seven I can imagine is what will happen to the Secret Six during the Flashpoint crossover, but that’s just me hypothesising.

See the thing is, I was so broke for such a long time through 6 years of college that once I started making money if I didn’t have a stack of backlogged games, and now trades, then I was afraid that I’d someday I would need to have a big stack to fall back on if times got rough. Just trying to be prepared for anything man ;)

I love that no matter what you can still find great full chunks of story for super cheap. Dollar trades are out there.

I love Elseworlds for being more involved than Marvel What Ifs and sometimes bringing damn interesting concepts. Quite a few deserve longer takes. A religious Batman sounds definitely worth a read.

yeah, I liked Elseworlds a lot so I thought I’d try some What If stuff, but I had trouble getting into it. The main problem was that it was so tied into existing marvel continuity – if you weren’t familiar with what it referenced, it wasn’t entertaining.
While DC ones are definitely better experienced with some knowledge, most of them start from an origin and play full-through, no watcher-introduction needed. You could even read the best ones completely on their own, never having heard of the superman or batman, and still probably enjoy them.

Holy Terror Batman! Holy Terror was such an awesome book way back when. Elseworlds were so much fun in the 90’s I almost wish there was a regular elseworld’s antholgy every month.

I’ve never heard of this one, surprisingly. I’d heard of Frank Miller’s intent to do a book called Batman: Holy Terror a few years back (now just Holy Terror, sans Batman), but never realized there was already a book by that name. Sounds cool!
