Up Down

So, I’ve put in a bit of time here and there, but I’m starting to get pretty heavily into building the Marvel database. This post is for Marc and all you other Marvel fans out there – what are your favorite resources for finding lists of Marvel Collected Editions and Graphic Novels?

Ideally, I’m looking for lists of everything but I’m not sure if that exists (yet! We’d like our database here to be comprehensive as well as ordered.)

Here are some good resources I’ve found so far:

The Collected Comics Library Checklists

Kind of hidden under the “Release Schedule” link on the front page of Collected Comics Library there are some awesome checklists for Marvel Masterworks, Omnibus, Premiere Classic, and Essentials titles. At first glance, they seem to be very complete and some up to date even to upcoming releases! I wish I knew about this resource when I was building the DC list – he’s got listings of Archives and Showcase books as well!

Marvel Masterworks Resource Page

Detailed information on the Masterworks and awesome forums. Also some other listings, but seems kind of out of date. As much as I love this site, it’s not gonna help me keep up with modern trades.

Millarworld’s TP List

Good for looking by character or title, but also out of date.

ComicBookDB

I’ll be checking dates and going through here to see if there’s anything I’ve missed for certain characters, but if you don’t know what you’re looking for (say a one off trade for an obscure 90s character or title, like “Witchcraft” for DC) it’s really easy to never even know something exists.

Those are the few I’ve got earmarked so far. There’s the official Marvel Catalog, which seems search-able, but I’m not sure how to get it to display a long list of trades for me. And if it’s anything like the DC one, there will probably be a lot missing!

Any good resources you use to find trades? Especially rare releases – those are the ones I’m gonna have the most trouble finding (I’m still finding the odd DC book, though I’m sure that we’re 99% up to date in the database, just gotta keep placing and filling in info for the titles already in.)

I gotta get a head start on this Marvel thing so I can upload it all as soon as I’m done with DC!

(Remember, act like I’m a Marvel newbie here. Sure, I’ve got about 155 Marvel books in my collection and I’ve read 99% of them, but compared to the almost 2000 other books, that’s just a dent. So lets start from the top!)

Glad to hear you’re starting on Marvel! Wikipedia has good, up-to-date lists for the Essentials, Masterworks, and Omnibus editions. Other than that, what you’ve got there are the best online resources for everything released 2000 and later. The biggest resource I’ve been using for “finding” trades to put in my own reading order is my uncanny memory for Marvel’s collected editions, which obviously isn’t too helpful for your purposes!

But what you’ve hit on is exactly the reason I set out to do a Marvel reading order before I even happened across your site: there just isn’t a comprehensive resource of any kind out there. Actually, I think that’s how I came across this site in the first place; I was looking to see if it had been done already. :)

I’m actually right smack in the middle of moving right now. Like, I’m literally in a hotel and don’t have access to all my computer files! But when I’m settled and things are normal, we’ll do some Marvel info-sharing — I think what I’ve got so far will be really helpful to you.

In the meantime, for older OOP trades try using the Advanced Search feature on http://www.mycomicshop.com. That’s what I’ve been doing, and I’ve found a lot of interesting stuff that way.

Looks like we’ll have to do it bit by bit little by little.

One of the things that actually helped me do the DC one, believe it or not, was Amazon recommending me titles. I’d add a title to my wishlist or buy it and it would recommend me another dc book. book after book. And then sometimes they would be ones I’d never heard of before, I’d check them at CBDB and ta-da!

thanks again for offering to help. I’m sure if we put our heads together we’ll get something pretty awesome up there. No worries about the time – focus on your moving, that’s important! This is gonna be a slow process anyway, I just want to start now offline so when it’s really close to being done I can import it into the database as close to finished as possible.

I’m starting now while I still have so much work on the DC line, because then I can at least update that a little every day so the site doesn’t sit stagnant after I’ve finished DC but before I’ve got marvel ready to go up.

Hello, I think your website might be having browser compatibility issues.

When I look at your blog in Chrome, it looks fine but when opening
in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up!
    Other then that, fantastic blog!
