Hourman (spelled “Hour-Man” in his earliest appearances, also referred to as “The Hour-Man”, and “The Hourman”) is the name of three different fictional DC Comics superheroes, the first of whom was created by Ken Fitch and Bernard Baily in Adventure Comics #48 (April 1940), during the Golden Age of comic books. Scientist Rex Tyler, working his way through college, landed a job researching vitamins and hormone supplements at Bannermain Chemical leading to a series of discoveries and accidents resulting in the “miraculous vitamin” Miraclo. After taking a dose himself, Rex found he had superhuman strength and speed for the hour that vitamin’s effects lasted before returning to human levels. Rick Tyler, Rex’s son, took over the Hourman mantle during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Rick swallowed some of his father’s Miraclo pills to save people trapped in a burning hospital. Rick went on to become an active member of the JSA and marry fellow member Liberty Belle (Jesse Chambers). The third Hourman, Matthew Tyler, is an android from the 853rd century modeled on Rex Tyler’s DNA. Often simply called “Tyler”, this Hourman often perceived himself as one of the role’s previous two incarnations. He was last seen destroyed at the hands of Extant in Rex’s place.
